Babalu Latin Restaurant is Luis Guzman's Go-To for Latin Cuisine
Actor Luis Guzman sat down with DNAinfo.com to talk about his favorite places in New York City, including Babalu Latin Restaurant, located in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx. Guzman—whose credits include "Boogie Nights," "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" and HBO's "How to Make it in America"—has been seen dining at Babalu several times and told DNAinfo it's one of his go-to places for Latin food in New York. "If I'm going to go out and have a good Latin American, Puerto Rican meal, stuff like that, I'm going to go to…Babalu," said Guzman. "That's some good home-cooking right there." Leonard Marshall at Babalu
Babalu Latin Restaurant was buzzing with excitement this past Sunday as New York Giants legend Leonard Marshall and his wife joined Celebrity Chef Alex Garcia and TV host Lisa Mateo for an evening of fun conversation and delicious food for Channel 11's Taste Makers. The restaurant was busy all day as brunchers and dinner guests alike hoped to catch a glimpse of the two-time Super Bowl champ. "It was fun having him there," said Chef Garcia. "We talked about everything from his home life to his career-defining moment playing against the 49ers, and we ate his favorite dish, Babalu's Mixed Grill. He also fell in love with our Cuban tamales," Chef Garcia continued, "and from there we got to talking about being Cuban and how Latin food is such a big part of our lives. He's from New Orleans so he loves the spiciness of Latin cuisine." After the meal, Mateo followed Chef Garcia to Babalu's kitchen, where he showed all of Taste Makers' viewers how to make a Babalu Mixed Grill in the comfort of their home. Of course, nothing beats the real thing! So visit www.babalubx.com or call 718-824-8400 to make a reservation at Babalu, and don't miss Babalu and Leonard Marshall this Saturday April 13, at 6:30 on Channel 11. Neighborhood Gems: 11 Summer Standbys in NYC
The folks in this area of the Bronx (including a couple blog readers who made this suggestion) swear that this cocktail lounge and supper club is just as good as anything in Manhattan. A wide selection of sangrias will cool you down, as will the Latin-inspired fare from chef Alex Garcia (who recently opened a new joint on the UWS). There is live music frequently , so once you get those internal temperatures down with a few ice-cold beverages, heat things back up with a little salsa dancing. One thing here that's different than Manhattan are the prices - you'll get a lot more bang for your buck, with most of the dishes costing well below $20.
